Chapter 22
A stiff breeze whipped around them, knocking petals off the flowering shrubs that lined the walkway. Addy let go of Tanner’s hands and took a step back. She couldn’t think of a response. Bringing Ashford and Preston back to Greystone felt like as big of a betrayal as when he blocked their connection.
He looked at her with pleading eyes. “Say something, girlie.”
There were too many people around for her to get into all the ways she felt like he was out of line by bringing them to Greystone. She glanced over her shoulder at Jax, who was waiting with Lem by the front entrance to the Pavilion. She took a deep breath and started toward her brother.
Tanner walked next to her and grabbed her hand. She made no effort to hold his hand back and let her arm hang limp. “I know you’re not happy about it, but—”
“They’re killers—you brought killers here,” she whispered as they stopped next to Lem and Jax.
Jax raised his eyebrows at Addy. “What now?”
“The cat and Lem aren’t the only ones the Shepherd let hitch a ride back to Greystone with him,” she said, pasting a big fake smile on her face for all the Akori standing around to see.
Tanner gave up trying to hold her hand. He waved his arms through the air and froze everything around them. “Preston helped me under the condition that I’d bring them back here so we could try to remove Oric’s red symbol from Ash.”
Addy felt a wave of sickness wash over her. “I’m not helping them with anything, so you may as well toss them back through the gate.”
He turned his hands over. “They have their powers back now—I won’t send them to Tremain.”
“You promised to help them—I didn’t. I won’t. I don’t know how you can just forgive him,” she said.
“I didn’t forgive him. I was just working with him toward a common goal,” he said, reaching up and cupping her cheek in his hand. “Since we’re talking about forgiveness—you forgave Matt and Renee for betraying you. Kim forgave Matt for stabbing her. You forgave me for what I did to you in the basement. Sometimes it just happens even when you don’t think it’ll be possible. I really want you to keep that in mind.”
“Wow—I didn’t expect to be getting a sermon on forgiveness today.”
“The red symbol is what lets Oric into Ash’s mind.” Tanner put his index finger under her chin, looking into her eyes. “Regardless of how you feel about him, it needs to be removed.”
Addy knew he was right, but she wasn’t about to admit it. “This is a lot of people to freeze. How long can you keep it like this?”
“I froze an entire museum full of humans in Tremain when we were searching for the statues. It lasted about an hour before it just unfroze by itself. I couldn’t use my power to stop time for days afterwards.”
She looked at Jax, who was frozen in place like everyone else. He could still see and hear them and she didn’t want to stand there and argue in front of him.
